White Rose Classic – Yorkshire Cycling

Welcome to the White Rose Classic 2022 – Ilkley Cycle Club is celebrating 10 years of running the event, the White Rose Classic is an established sportive taking you through the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. The event goes from strength to strength each year and to many is Yorkshire’s Premier Sportive.

In 2019 we teamed up with Nell Bank, (https://www.nellbank.org) which is the event HQ and is a perfect location for the start/finish line and post ride event village where riders can relax in peaceful surroundings.

We offer 3 routes to choose from:

– Short route via Grassington, enjoy the unique Yorkshire scenery and friendly camaraderie of a Club-run sportive.

– Medium route via Settle for those riders looking for a challenge.

– Long route via Hawes, for an authentic Yorkshire challenge with some serious climbing.

The event fee includes fully stocked feed stops, mechanical and medical support, in addition we provide a free post ride meal to each rider in the event village. There’s also beer on tap, fresh ice cream and we’ll bring back the live music. The easily accessible HQ facility also provides ample car and bike parking.

Once again, we are pleased to make road cycling more accessible to all. Don’t be intimidated: ride solo or with friends in a supportive environment where you can push yourself and help others.

The White Rose Classic is organised and run entirely by volunteers from Ilkley Cycling Club. All profits from the event go towards promoting grassroots cycling initiatives, local charities including Nell Bank and supporting our youth development programme, along with encouraging more men and women to ride bikes as per our club motto “From Recreation to Racing.”

Selby Three Swans Sportive – Yorkshire Cycling

Selby 3 Swans, another amazing new event in the Velo29 Calendar!

This Sportive was established originally by Selby Cycling Club, a victim of its own success and a credit to the great job done by the club it rapidly outgrew the capacity of a Club setup so was passed to Yorkshire Cancer Research. Hit by the pandemic, the charity is no longer able to run the event so Velo29 have stepped in to retain what is an important event for Yorkshire Cancer Research and to give you all yet another awesome day out on the bike!

20% of your entry fee (excluding booking fee) will go to Yorkshire Cancer Research, 5% will go to Selby Cycling Club. You are of course welcome to fundraise and donate further to the charity if you wish, we’d love to hear your stories on that.

As always, 3 great routes, feed stops on all of them, brilliant Velo29 signage, our great ride support and of course the friendliest atmosphere you’re likely to encounter!

Get your entry in soon!

UP T’ DALE – 25 MILER
A FAIRLY EASY RIDE WHICH GIVES YOU A TASTE OF YORKSHIRE CYCLING.

BEGINNER RIDER ◆ DIFFICULTY 2 ◆ ↗ 528M ◆ FOOD/DRINKS STOPS 1 ◆ DEPART 11:00AM

Rated 2/5 for difficulty as some might not be used to Yorkshire hills, this beautiful undulating route weaves up the Wharfe Valley for a gentle half days ride.
There are some nips along the route (this is Yorkshire after all) but none last for long, lots of people get off and walk and the scenery is well worth it.
Taking “The Back Road”, the route weaves along stone walled country roads, past the ruins of the 12th Century Bolton Abbey and out towards historic Barden Tower. A steep descent to the river, crossing via the ancient Bridge onto the east bank is followed by your first challenging climb. The road then rolls on to its half way point in pretty Burnsall village, home to Postman Pat, for a well deserved food stop provided by the flabulous ‘Wharfe View Cafe’.
Heading back on the west side of the river you’re straight into your toughest climb, but from here, it’s mostly down hill and you’ll pick up the road back through Bolton Abbey, meeting up with riders from other routes for the final 10km home.

OVER YONDER – 50 MILER
A CRACKING MID LEVEL RIDE.

INTERMEDIATE RIDER ◆ DIFFICULTY 3 ◆ ↗ 967M ◆ FOOD/DRINKS STOPS 2 ◆ DEPART 09:00AM

Rated 3/5 for difficulty, this is a stunning and challenging intermediate ride. Leaving Ilkley on “The Back Road”, the route follows that of the 25 milers, before turning off just before Burnsall and heading through Grassington after which the ride takes on a different feel, snaking up the flat (Yorkshire flat), valley bottom on single track, low traffic roads, past Great Whernside and on to delightful Kettlewell and your first refreshment stop.
You’ll continue a little further up the valley, before heading south, past the limestone cliffs of Kilnsley Cragg and back to Burnsall for a legendary Fat Lad lunch stop provided by the flabulous ‘Wharfe View Cafe’ at 60.5km. You’ll be ready for it and post lunch you’ll take on your toughest climb out of Burnsall on the west side of the river.
It’s mostly down hill after that as you pick up the road back through Bolton Abbey, meeting up with riders from the other routes for the final 10km home.

THE FULLOCK – 75 MILER
A CHALLENGING RIDE THROUGH STUNNING SCENERY AND DEEP INTO THE YORKSHIRE DALES.

STRONG INTERMEDIATE RIDER ◆ DIFFICULTY 4 ◆ ↗ 1600M ◆ FOOD/DRINKS STOPS 2 ◆ DEPART 08:15AM

Rated 4/5 for difficulty this is a challenging route with some tough climbing. Taking the “The Back Road” to Askwith, there’s a long steady ascent onto Askwith Moor which will warm your legs up for arguably the toughest part of the ride, the climb through West End and up Greenhow Hill.
Thereafter it’s a nice rolling downhill through the charming village of Hebden and into Grassington. You’ll be through most of the climbing now and the ride takes on a different feel, snaking up the flat valley bottom on single track, very low traffic roads, past Great Whernside and to Kettlewell for your first refreshment stop.
Then you have half an hour or so to enjoy the breathtaking isolated valley of Littondale and the gentle climb up Silverdale between the towering hills of Pen-y-ghent and Fountains Fell, before the last real ascent of the day.
You’ll pass Malham tarn and (carefully) take the steep, winding descent off Malham Moor, past the dramatic limestone cliffs of Malham Cove and into Malham village.
After our legendary Fat Lad lunch stop it’s pretty much down hill all the way! Almost! You’ll undulate your way home, through rolling farmland and Yorkshire stone villages picking up ‘The Back Road’ from Bolton Abbey and riders from the other routes, to follow the River Wharfe to the finish where you’ll be 1600m of climbing and many lung fulls of the freshest Yorkshire air, better off.

THE EPIC – 100 MILER
DEFINITELY EPIC AND ONE OF THE TOUGHEST, MOST BEAUTIFUL ROUTES IN THE DALES.

ADVANCED RIDER ◆ DIFFICULTY 5 ◆ ↗ 2325M ◆ FOOD/DRINKS STOPS 4 ◆ DEPART 07:30AM

Planned to give our most experienced riders, (already comfortable on our Fullock route), a new challenge.
The Epic is guaranteed to test, taking you deep into the stunning Dales and up some of Yorkshire’s most iconic climbs. Setting off from Ilkley and heading through Bolton Abbey and up the valley, your first leg warmer skirts around Appletreewick, climbs to Hebden and flattens through Grassington and Kettlewell, where you’ll stop for your first refreshments.
Thereafter you’ll snake up the breathtaking (literally) Park Rash with it’s 25% inclines and hairpin bends and on through Coverdale. Stop for a quick refresh in Swinithwaite before your next big climb up Kidstones. Then it’s all down hill back to Kettlewell and lunch.
You’re onwards towards Kilnsey, before picking up the route to Malham and your final challenge of the day.
Riders will need experience of long distances and Yorkshire (style) territory to get the most from this day. Ride Marshalls will be around to mentor and coach but for your own safety and enjoyment, riders will have to make our checkpoints by certain times to continue on the ride.
Riders registered on this ride can swap to the shorter routes before or on the day via our sign up pages.

5 Dales Sportive – Yorkshire Cycling

The 5 Dales Sportive has run under the umbrella of Richmond Cycling Club for the past 12 years. The club has now decided to hand over the event to Velo29 to ensure its longevity as one of the most challenging Sportives in the calendar.

This is in effect for the 2018 event, we’ve moved the date to September which is essential and also avoids a very busy spring calendar, hopefully, the new date offers a late-season challenge in some fine autumnal weather!

In 2014 Richmond CC introduced the Tour de France Special Edition routes which due to their popularity and excellent feedback Velo29 have decided to continue.

With a choice of 5, 4 and 3 Dales tours to enjoy, this is one of the toughest rides there is! The 5 dales, at 190km and 3,500m of ascending, is brutal by anyone’s standards. The routes and scenery are stunning, this is a part of the World not often explored on a bike, we go so far into the Dales that unless well supported in an event such as this, few would brave the challenge!

White Horse Sportive – Yorkshire Cycling

The White Horse is a fine way to end your Sportive Season.

With three distance options, there is something to suit all abilities. From the 26mile short route with one “challenge” climb, the Medium route with some major hills and the long route which tackles both Carlton and White Horse Bank. The routes are all really well designed and though the distances are not overly long there are no sections which are just there to get from A to B. Every mile is on beautiful North Yorkshire country roads with great views, breathtaking views and hardly a car in sight.

As well as the climbs we enjoy some fast and challenging descents and some great sections which are our personnel favourites but hardly known by local riders. The medium and long enjoy a brilliant 15mile section from the White Horse to Osmotherley, roads you won’t know well but will do soon!

Everyone arrives back at the HQ with a real buzz, as we twist through the empty lanes with only cyclists in sight we’ll be lost in what a wonderful route the White Horse is and how enjoyable riding these roads in a Velo29 Event really can be.

Ride Vyking Sportive for Action Medical Research – Yorkshire Cycling

CHANNEL YOUR INNER VYKING
Vykings assemble for this brand new Yorkshire bike ride in the grounds of Gilling Castle where the serene landscape will lull all into a false sense of security ahead of a less than gentle Sunday morning ride out.

This sportive promises a thigh-busting ride that will leave you gasping for breath as you take on 6473ft of gain on the longer route and 2999ft of gain on the shorter route.

Offering up our toughest sportive yet the Vyking charity bike ride takes in some of the most feared climbs in England. Alongside brutal ascents including Boltby Bank, the dreaded Rosedale Chimney will call on you to channel your inner Viking and summon up the power of Odin before attacking this top ten climb. With an average gradient of 13% and a maximum of 33%, it is the joint steepest paved road in England. This universally feared, chain-snapping, vicious, double hairpin stretch may only be 0.8m miles but the only ones amused by its one-in-three gradient will be the grazing sheep you’ll be dodging!

Alongside the brutal climbs, if you have time to look up, the routes offer miles of stunning views across Yorkshire as well as fantastic country lanes and roads through spectacular landscape.

Be a Vyking for the day with Action Medical Research on this charity cycle ride with first-class support throughout the day and help our fight for little lives.

Etape du Dales 110 Miles – Yorkshire Cycling

The Etape du Dales is a stunning ride through some of the UK’s most remote and scenic countryside. The route of 110 miles covers many of the county’s major climbs and the dales of Wharfedale, Littondale, Wensleydale, Swaledale, Arkengarthdale, Birkdale, Garsdale, Dentdale, Ribblesdale – AND there is not a single set of traffic lights on the whole route!

Whichever route you take, each one of them features the opportunity to enjoy magnificent Yorkshire Dales scenery and warm Yorkshire hospitality.

Each of our feed stations are generously stocked with a variety of treats that should satisfy every dietary requirement. We do everything we can to make sure you have the energy you will need to keep you going all the way to the finish back at Wharfedale Rugby Club where a hearty finishing meal awaits.

The Etape rides cover classic routes that tackle a number of renown named climbs – and innumerable bumps and hills along the way. But you get to choose how challenging a ride you make it – from a leisurely day out in the Yorkshire Dales to a challenging epic demanding all your strength and experience.

Still covering the same 110 miles in the Yorkshire Dales as in previous years and starting and finishing at Wharfedale Rugby Club in Threshfield near Grassington. The 2018 event turned the tables and went the opposite way round to the traditional route, and many riders liked the change and the option of a shorter route, so we’re keeping it that way round for another year. The Etape du Dales is an extremely difficult ride and requires an excellent level of fitness, and riders are now faced with the northern ascents of Buttertubs and Fleet Moss, the summit of the latter coming at just 20 miles to go! The course has good signage, legendary feed stations but you still should be aware of the route and terrain. Make sure you have adequate clothing and your equipment is in perfect order, a bottom gear of 34 x 28 as a minimum is recommended.

Threshfield to Ribblehead
After a gentle start up the stunningly picturesque valley of Littondale to Halton Gill, the first major climb of the event comes with the climb of Dale Head over the back of the peak of Pen-y-ghent and down to Stainforth FEED STATION. In Stainforth its a right turn up through Horton-in Ribblesdale and on to Ribblehead. 28.6m

Ribblehead to Garsdale Head
This section is gem! It starts off innocently with a steady climb away from Ribbblehead towards Hawes before turning left (the mini Etape Route carries straight on here so follow the correct signs!) and plunges down in to Dentdale. As with every valley on the route, what goes down must go up and the next climb is the epic pull up to Dent Station, the highest mainline station in England. Cresting the top of the climb, please exercise great caution on the very steep fast descent to Garsdale where right to the Moorcock FEED STATION. 41m

The Moorcock to the Tan Hill Inn
Leaving the Moorcock, head north along Mallerstang Common under the stunning Wild Boar Fell (keep an eye out for the Nine Standards on the peak) to Nateby where right. Continue up the steep climb and over the wild and remote moorland road to Keld to a left turn up yet another steep climb to the FEED STATION at the highest pub in the UK, the Tan Hill Inn. 63m

Tan Hill To Hawes
Leaving the feed station there is a little bit of respite as the road descends gently for 7 miles before the right turn towards Low Row. This signifies the start of the steep and unrelenting climb to the ford which over the years has proved to be a bathers delight – you have been warned. The sensible option is the footbridge. Descend to Low Row and follow the valley of Swaledale west to the bottom of the next epic climb – Buttertubs! Once over here its all down hill to the last FEED STATION on the route out of Hawes. 87m

Fleet Moss and Homeward Bound
With almost 90 miles in your legs the climb of Fleet Moss from the north side is one of the steepest and longest of a very hard day, but the top is a welcome site as its almost all down hill from now on. If you’re not in too much of a rush to finish, the delightful valley of Wharfedale is a sight to behold – one of Yorkshire’s gems so enjoy!
